Oblivion
Oblivion is the last book of the Power of Five series written by Anthony Horowitz. The Old Ones are once again back to wreak havoc on earth and the only way earth can survive is if the five gatekeepers, Matt, Jamie, Scott, Pedro and Scarlett find each other and unite as one to defeat the king of the Old Ones. This had been done once before by children and it was believed that the Old Ones would never surface again. However, with the help of Night Rise corporation they have been freed and this time things have changed, the Old Ones have the advantage. They have set up in a place called oblivion and have taken one of the gatekeepers. What can be done to stop them?
Oblivion is called so because the Old Ones have returned to earth and are staying in Oblivion. This place is known to humans as Antarctica.... Oblivion will be the place where the worlds fate will be decided for years to come. Anthony explores many themes in this book. He mainly focuses on however, the good and evil of man and what it can do to us as a race and the world around us. He develops on this by introducing good and evil characters into the story to either help the five or hinder their quest in stopping the Old Ones. He does a very good job at showing how evil man can be and that we do not need evil beings around us to destroy the world because we can be capable of destroying it ourselves. Outlining the difference of good and evil can relate to reality for many people because we know that as a race we are not perfect and many people do not come out good and follow the path of evil. The book uses real world places but the destruction and many of the mythical and horrendous beings in this book are far beyond realism and are used to send fear into the readers mind. This means that he mainly focuses on using many strong and emotive words, negative language and themes in the book to give the book mored of a gloomy feel. |
